What is Devil World (Europe)?

Devil World (Europe) is an arcade-style classic game, which Miyamoto created, developed, and published in Japan for the Famicom and NES system. This maze game is modeled after the iconic Pac-Man and sets ghosts, power-ups, and furious-paced actions all-for-one enchanting plus-one-million maze. Just like its other charm and unique association with the creator himself, it's one of only a handful of NES-games ever developed during Miyamoto's era that never made it to the Western side, thus making it a mystique. Until recent times, it has been available for download on the Wii's Virtual Console for the new generation to enjoy.

Gameplay

Devil World is of classic Pac-Man formula but has a few twists. You control a small devil-like character that is crossing through dark castles of labyrinthine levels. You eat all dots while avoiding ghosts unless you had obtained a power-up. With the power-up activated, you can prey on the ghosts themselves. Known for tough levels and fast gameplay, the game will test your reflexes and strategic thinking.

Tips & Tricks

Understand Ghosts' Patterns: Each ghost behaves differently. Study their patterns to predict their movements and avoid them when you are unpowered.
Conserve Your Power-ups: Do not save power-ups for ghosts that are weak. Instead, save them for when you are surrounded or need to escape in a tough spot.
Dress a Path: Spend a few seconds scanning the abode before diving into a level. Search for short cuts and hidden dots to gain extra points.
Stay Calm: The game can make you frantic, but staying calm and focused will allow you to glide through the challenging parts.

History

Devil World (Europe) was the only Shigeru Miyamoto-designed and produced NES game not officially released in the United States. Developed by Nintendo Japan, the title displayed Miyamoto's foray into maze games, a genre he would later master with Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. Its neglect from Western markets immediately secured it a cult following among retro gamers, and its Virtual Console release now let fans experience its gameplay firsthand.
